When I last heard from Attic Base, they had a self-released debut album entitled "Action" that I enjoyed, but didn't find myself drawn to again and again. That was back in 1999. In 2002, the band released their second album, "Night Visions", as a label member of Kinetic Response Records. There was one track carried over from the previous album, "Electric Butterfly", but it's been completely overhauled and re-recorded.
The band still utilizes a combination of male and female vocals (with the female taking leads for the majority of the tracks), but the production this time out is much, much better. In fact, I almost want to say they sound like a totally different band. Very polished and smooth. Actually, this album seemed to get little to no notice when it was released.
Perhaps it slipped under everybody's radar, because it is a surprisingly high-quality album. It mixes darker elements with the more normal synthpop style to yield an intriguingly moody and mysterious sound. Sometimes the male vocalist sounds a bit rough, but overall the production here is leaps and bounds beyond the previous album.
Anyway, A Different Drum currently has this disc in their discount bin at $8. If the idea of a darkwave-influenced synthpop band that mixes and combines male and female vocals intrigues you, this is a low-priced (but very worthwhile) album to check out!
