The only way I became aware of this band was when Todd D. of ADD posted to Electrogarden in a thread about lesser-known bands in the electro/synthpop scene. He mentioned this band was somewhat reminiscent of Zeta to him, and seeing as how I was really enraptured with that band's sole release, I decided to give them a try.
The band's sound really isn't all that reminiscent of Zeta's, not in a direct way. I suppose Todd was referring to the lyrical content more than the music, because the band tends to have a EBM hybrid synthpop sound that is somewhat reminiscent of Neuroactive. In some ways they seem to have a spiritual slant to the lyrics that seems to dance around really being affiliated with a sole religion, but the band states in one interview "there is certainly a spiritual element to it. Our intentions are always to express ourselves on an emotional and often inadvertently spiritual level, Mark through his musical creativity and me through lyrical content and vocal delivery". They describe their musical sound as Electro-Goth, and I suppose that's a fairly accurate description.
Although it may be inadvertent, the spiritual nature of several of these songs is surprisingly forward in nature. "Spinning Sideways", "Tunnel", "Saviour" and "Epilogue" all have a very strong spiritual bent to them, and I find myself really, really enjoying that. "Zen?" is probably the most hard-hitting track on the album, with a thumping beat and bassline making into just about the most-club friendly track on the album. But there are several tracks that would be right at home in a club setting as well as "Zen?", such as "Run". "Saviour", "Tunnel" and "If I Could".
The best way I can come up with to describe this album is this: If you like the harder, more aggressive synth programming and smooth vocal textures explored in bands such as VNV Nation and Assemblage 23, I think you'll enjoy this album a good bit. As long as you aren't turned away by the spiritual nature of some of the songs, I think you'll really enjoy this.
