Red Flag continues with the darker tone they established in "The
Crypt
", and though there are some real gems on this album, at points
the strain of putting out so much material in so little time begins to show
through. In some songs on this disc, the tracks feel a bit threadbare, and more
deserving of b-side status than album status. There are some really excellent
songs, such as "Cause And Consequence", "On The Highway",
"Spiders Waltz", "Lullaby For A Restless Girl", and
"Mathematics Of Tears". And every time I hear the song
"Destiny", I hear in my mind a sample from the movie "Young
Frankenstein" right after the chorus ends... ;-)
However, some of the tracks, such as "I Am The Wind", and
"Live Fast, Die Pretty".. Well, they come across as being dark and
dismal merely for the sake of being dark and dismal. In all honesty, I wish that
instead of doing what comes across to me as tracks that were somewhat forced, RF
had thrown in a upbeat/happy track or two, rather than a 'dark' song that comes
across as somewhat forced. But, I wouldn't want a forced sounding happy track,
either. I know, a contradicting position to take, but it's the best way I can
come up with to explain it. I guess what I'm trying to say is rather than
forcing a song into the 'style of the band', my personal preference is that the
band do what's right for each song, even if that means months of development and
refinement. One thing I do want to be sure I mention is that I really
enjoyed the final instrumental track.
Overall, I would say this album is quite similar to "The
Eagle And Child
" in several ways. Some excellent, wonderful songs, and
some that are somewhat mediocre. It's a good album, no question, but not as
groundbreaking or attention-grabbing as "The Crypt" was.
