Rupesh Cartel is a new signing to the A Different Drum label, but the band has been in the formative stages since 1996, when the band members Viktor Ginner and Daniel Gustafsson first met and shared each other's desire to create music. After putting together a 4 track demo, the band laid dormant for several years as life's demands kept the pair from devoting time to working on music together. But eventually the members moved back to the same area and were able to work together again, and this debut single on ADD is the first fruits of their new work together.
"Contract" shows the band in a light, poppy vein with bubbly synth leads combining with smooth vocals and a pulsing dance beat to create a quite catchy song. "One Pair Of Hands" introduces a little more effects on the vocals, and it is a really nice touch, smoothing out the vocals' occasional rough edge nicely. However, the vocals come out sounding somewhat whiney on the ballad "Childhood's Faith". The Breach mix of "Contract" was remixed by Ron Verboom, and it is molded into a hard-stomping trance track. The Essence From Beyond mix gives a little more weight to the melody of the song, while still enhancing the beat for the dancefloor.
Overall, it's a good single. The song is catchy and upbeat, and while the vocals occasionally show a little weakness, Rupesh Cartel can write a very solid melody. It should be interesting to see how the album holds up in comparison to this taster.
