Rotersand are a German band formed in 2002 by Rasc and Gun, veterans of bands such as The Fair Sex, 1am and Warm. One year later, the duo invited Techno and Electro underground producer Krischan E.Wesenberg to join them. This new single is also their debut on Dependent Records.
Exterminate Annihilate Destroy shows the boys to be fans of Doctor Who, using a Dalek sound sample throughout this track. Using heavy industrial beats, the track also contains very simple yet prominent melody lines. The heavy beats eventually give way to strings in a subdued winding down of this heavy track. Lyrically, this track is themed around why people are willing to commit to a cause and perform acts of violence. The album edit of the single is not too different from the original, but we hear lighter beats and more percussion. The Renoised version is a different matter altogether though, with beats getting even more distorted than previously and any semblance of melody removed. Not one for my ears, I’m afraid.
Last Ship adds in thumping bass and menacing vocals, but it’s not too much of a deviation from the original recipe. For some reason this track reminds me quite a bit of Covenant, although I may be reading too much into the Ship subject matter. It’s a good track and one worth further rotation.
Best track on the single is Caustic Greed. Light synths and guitar open this track, which are then mixed with light percussion and the obligatory thumping bass. This is altogether a comparatively more subdued track from the Rotersand boys and maybe an area worth future exploration. The guitar on this track is exceptional and shows a deftness in the playing style, very subtle, which is not what I would necessarily associate with this genre of music. It’s almost as if they’ve roped in Don Henley from his Boys of Summer-era and just built a track around him. Very nice, and easily the pick of this tracklisting.
